Description of the Flag

Certainly inspired by its portuguese homonym, the flag of P.S.D. has an orange background, with the logo centered thereon. This is a white triangle pointing down with a bicolor drop shadow, light blue in the fly side and green on the hoist side. Inscribed in the triangle a seal with two concentric black circumferences. The inside disc is horizontaly divided in orange and light blue, a crocodile head issuant from the hoist side charged with three small arrows (yet another symbolic link with the portuguese P.S.D.): green, white and light blue. The crocodile is a recorrent symbol in timorese iconography, due to a geography inspired legend describing the appearence of the island from the body of a huge crocodile. On the edge of the seal, back sans capitals reading "Solidariedade Igualdade Liberdade" (solidarity, equality, liberty).

Presentation of P.S.D.

P.S.D. got 29 726 votes in the 2001.08.30 elections (8,18%), recieving 6 of 88 seats in the parlament — even if P.S.D. got only 14% of Fretilin’s result, it got to be the third party in these elections, closely surrounded by A.S.D.T. and P.D. These results however were considered disappointing, as this party had the sympathy of historical leader Xanana Gusmão and 1998 Nobel Peace Prize winner Ramos Horta.
